But then so do the experts in the field, apparently; For a general reference, Wikipedia classifies (purely) functional programming languages as declarative. As a specific example, a Paul Bone, who has a PhD for work on pure declarative languages, also follows this definition. I’d be curious to know for what reason you take offence at the definition.

Dec 20, 2010 at 11:13 comment added Konrad Rudolph Pure functional programming language are by their very nature declarative. So is Linq, Python’s list comprehension, XAML, XSLT, SQL and Prolog. All of which are bona fide programming languages and/or concepts. While most programming languages are imperative, this is not the defining feature. At all.
