I am reading up on Kafka and encountered the following on one of the tutorials.

  1. The producer sends the following to the broker - unique message identifier, timestamp and a binary payload.
  2. The consumers maintain autonomy in reading with the help of offset. And this offset is the same as the message identifier that was sent to the broker by the producer.

Is the second point correct? By intuition I think that offset should be serial. But can it be any unique identifier?
