Nov 22, 2011 at 15:20 comment added TMN @BryanOakley: Agreed, I was hoping to address the "inspiration" side of the question. Tufte's book doesn't offer much concrete advice for UI design, except for the exhortation to avoid "chartjunk" and "ducks".
Nov 22, 2011 at 13:55 comment added Bryan Oakley All right then... If I could chang my original comment I would change it to "... good book for someone without many UI design skills....?". Maybe that's still too harsh, but my point is that, in my opinion, Tufte is a bit heavy for someone looking for practical advice about GUI design.
Nov 22, 2011 at 13:27 comment added Michael Riley - AKA Gunny @TMN - Thank you, I agree with you, I do not want to just stick labels and text boxes on a screen. The proof of concept phase has come and gone, I know it works. Now, it's time to take the UI to the next level.

Nov 22, 2011 at 2:21 comment added TMN @BryanOakley: He said he first designed the screen for a screen resolution of 640x480, that has to be several years ago, so I doubt he's a beginner. And he gave no indication that the UI was simple (or that it wasn't). I was just relating some resources that helped me when I started really designing UIs, instead of just sticking a bunch of text boxes and labels on the screen.

Nov 22, 2011 at 1:21 comment added Bryan Oakley Do you honestly think that's a good book for a beginner to come up with a simple UI design? I don't. It's a valuable book, but it's a bit like suggesting they learn about opening a restaurant when all they want to do is bake a batch of cookies.
