Mar 24, 2016 at 0:15 comment added mulllhausen @DocBrown hmm I though I read something different earlier. Anyway, I have updated the Problem section in the question to add the detail you require. I hope that clarifies. Please let me know if its still unclear.

Mar 23, 2016 at 14:30 comment added Doc Brown Honestly, that was not what was asking for - where did you read that? My problem of understanding here is what exactly the automation requirements are, and how much user interaction in the client already takes place, which is an indicator for how much additional user interaction is acceptable. Or, what is the event which triggers the CSV files in stake "to appear in a directory"? Some automation? Or a user, which presses a button.

Mar 23, 2016 at 14:23 comment added mulllhausen @DocBrown that should say "what kinds of data will be in them"
Mar 23, 2016 at 14:16 comment added mulllhausen @DocBrown I know the file format of the CSV - ie I know what the fields will be and why kinds of data will be in them. However I don't know how many rows will be in the file and I don't know what the data will be either. Also the data is all generated by the user's program at once (ie the individual rows do not become available at different points in time). The contents of the file are not that important, the problem I have is how to automate the upload of this data.
Mar 23, 2016 at 13:38 comment added Doc Brown @AdamZuckerman: I do not think this is necessarily too broad, depends on what the OP might respond to my questions above.
Mar 23, 2016 at 13:17 comment added Adam Zuckerman @docbrown The question is too broad to be answerable. Unfortunately (for me), it is better than what most of the analysts at work produce.
Mar 23, 2016 at 8:37 comment added Doc Brown What do you know about the program generating the CSV files for automatic upload? When you wrote "I have no visibility into this", do you mean you do not know this program, or you cannot change that program, or it can be different programs for different users? Does this program only generate one CSVs once per day, or many of them once per day? Does it generate them automatically, or does the user has to press a button for the export? @AdamZuckerman: as you see, lots of things are not so clear here ;-)

Mar 23, 2016 at 5:03 comment added Adam Zuckerman I need to get you to start writing functional requirements for my users/analysts. This is one of the most clearly written set of requirements I have seen for a while...
