Dec 30, 2010 at 21:07 | comment | added | gablin | I think you're just taking too long leaps. Going from the book examples to full-fledged Sourceforge projects is vast and daunting. Instead, try extending what you've already built. Add features, add GUIs, add network capabilities; and pretty soon, I imagine you'll have your own project on Sourceforge.

Dec 29, 2010 at 21:46 | comment | added | S.Lott | "They dont't show you how to develop complex programs that actually do anything useful!"? What does "useful" mean? Please update your question to clearly state what you mean by "useful". With examples.

Dec 29, 2010 at 21:17 | comment | added | mtrw | @Michael - I, for one, voted as Off-Topic, move to P.SE. I thought that would be a more appropriate place for a discussion on programming as a career and a craft.
Dec 29, 2010 at 21:17 | comment | added | user1249 | What would you consider to be "useful"?
Dec 29, 2010 at 21:15 | comment | added | yurib | well i don't think i'm even nearly enough of an experienced programmer to answer this question but i think what you're lacking is knowledge in software engineering. I'd suggest reading about programming methodologies and software analysis and design processes. then choose an idea and try to apply what you've read and learned.
Dec 29, 2010 at 21:14 | comment | added | Ioannis Karadimas | I would suggest some reading on business applications or software design would be of use to you... Perhaps some business studies, as well.

Dec 29, 2010 at 21:10 | comment | added | duffymo | Some people just aren't meant to program. Only you can answer whether an alternative path would sort you out or if it's time to try something else. You're unlikely to get an answer that will be useful here.
