Open Source will be a lot easier to break into for a non-HS grad (all they're looking for is somebody who'll do the job right), and is something a company might be interested in.

Yes, these are the steps, but without a valid context and clearly stating the probabilities of achieving it, the steps are simply an statement of the obvious.
