TDD stands for Test-Driven Development, or Test-Driven Design. It is the practice of writing a unit test before writing code to satisfy it, in what is known as the Red-Green-Refactor cycle.

When is it appropriate to not unit test?

My advice is to only test the code that you want to work properly. Don't test the code that you want to be buggy and to cause problems for you down the road.
